ictQATAR has signed a memorandum of understanding with Creative Commons to bring an official affiliate of the non-profit organization to Qatar. Creative Commons develops, supports, and stewards legal and technical infrastructure that maximizes digital creativity, sharing, and innovation. Creative Commons Qatar will work to engage the local community in using Creative Commons principles and licenses in their creative works, with the goal of growing an environment in Qatar that embraces openness, sharing and collaboration, leading to greater innovation and hopefully spurring more Arab-originated content. Creative Commons can be applied to almost any “creative” field, including music, science, technology, art, government and medicine. A series of workshops will be held over the course of the year, helping content creators understand how they can apply Creative Commons to their works. Initial focus areas include photography, graphic design, web development and visual arts. ictQATAR will lead the affiliate initially and will engage organizations and individuals in these efforts to build a vibrant Creative Commons community in Qatar. Prominent organizations engaged in these efforts include Al Jazeera and the Qatar Museum Authority. The official launch of the Creative Commons Qatar affiliate took place May 31, 2011 at the Museum of Islamic Art. |
